Comprehensive Stormwater Vulnerability Assessment
The City of Tamarac drainage system is extensive and provides a significant amount of Stormwater flood protection for the residents and businesses of Tamarac. The performance of the Tamarac drainage system, like most of South Florida’s drainage, is dependent upon operation and performance of the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Canal System, which ultimately receives the area’s Stormwater discharge. On March 22, 2023, via Resolution Number R-2023-031, the City Commission approved acceptance of a Grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for the development of a Comprehensive Stormwater Vulnerability Assessment that focuses on identifying threats from flooding for all critical assets and address vulnerabilities to reduce potential environmental, economic, and public safety risks. The proposed work, as funded by the FDEP Grant, to be performed by Chen Moore & Associates, Inc., was approved by City Commission via Resolution Number R-2024-033 which includes the collection of data associated with stormwater structures, including swale and retention/detention area cross-sections, headwalls, seawalls, and stormwater pump stations. The assessment, as necessitated by the increasing climatic changes and their impacts on our stormwater infrastructure, will use historical data, advanced modeling, and coordination with regional entities to complete a planning document that will allow for resiliency efforts to be increased in the most effective way. Once the assessment is adopted, the City of Tamarac will be able to utilize the recommendations from the report to implement the adaptation strategies on its critical infrastructure.
