TAMARAC RETAINS FLOOD INSURANCE DISCOUNTS FOR RESIDENTS

Press Releases Posted on April 25, 2025

TAMARAC, Fla. (April 25, 2025) – More than 5,000 Tamarac property owners required to carry flood insurance can continue to receive a 20% discount, thanks to the Class 6 rating the City has held by the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (CRS) since 2011.

Every year, the City publishes an annual progress report describing its floodplain management that is available at www.Tamarac.org/flood. It outlines how the City maintains its water systems and roadways, including:

  • Approximately 560 acres of open waterways
  • 82 miles of drainage pipes and 4,669 catch basins
  • Approximately 137 miles of paved roadways
  • Three stormwater pump stations

Current ongoing or recently completed Storm Water System Capital Improvement Projects/Studies include:

Citywide Culvert and Headwall Improvements – Phase VII:

This citywide program addresses the repair or replacement of culverts and headwalls due to weather-related deterioration. With a bi-annual budget of $800,000, the current phase includes replacing three headwalls at a proposed cost of $700,000. Design is 95% complete, and construction is expected to begin in July 2025.

Citywide Culvert and Headwall Improvements – Phase VIII:

This project involves repairing or replacing culverts and headwalls due to weather-related deterioration. Phase VII funding will support culvert gate and aluminum headwall improvements at Nob Hill Rd. and Hiatus Rd.

Westwood Blvd East Drainage Improvement Project:

This project involves drainage improvements along Westwood Blvd East, from NW 94th Ave/Westwood Blvd to W. McNab Road. It focuses on enhancing the drainage system to improve resilience and address water ponding issues.

C-14 Canal Erosion Control Project:

This project involved designing and installing rip-rap bank stabilization along the C-14 Canal, opposite the City’s West and Central Storm Water Master Pump Stations, to address erosion caused by high outfall flows (105,000 GPM per station). The project, with a budget of $900,000, has been completed.

NW 77th Street Swale Drainage and Sidewalk Improvement Project:

This project involved installing 1,200 LF of Type F-Curbing to redirect stormwater to catch basins, along with a new 5-ft concrete sidewalk and milling/resurfacing of NW 77th Street between Nob Hill Road and Greenwood Blvd. (Sports Complex east entrance). It was completed in August 2024.

Comprehensive Stormwater Vulnerability Assessment:

This project involves developing a Comprehensive Stormwater Vulnerability Assessment for Tamarac's drainage system, identifying flood threats to critical assets and addressing vulnerabilities. It includes data collection on stormwater structures, such as swales, retention areas, headwalls, seawalls, and pump stations. The assessment will use historical data and advanced modeling to create a plan for enhancing resiliency, allowing the City to implement adaptation strategies for critical infrastructure once adopted.

NW 94th Ave Roadway Drainage Improvements Project:

This project includes installing drainage improvements such as infiltration trench pipe, drainage structures, and associated work within existing landscape medians, along with removing and resurfacing the asphaltic concrete pavement on NW 94th Avenue.

Statistics show that all homes have a 26% chance of experiencing a flood during the life of a 30-year mortgage – whether they’re in a flood zone or not. That’s why the City encourages residents and businesses to learn about flood hazards and protections and to carry flood insurance, even if they aren’t required to do so. FEMA notified the city of a new revised FIRM panel and the city notified property owners. This area consisted of 131 properties 99 were in a flood zone and were removed into an X zone and the remaining 32 property flood zones remained the same.

Tamarac distributes an annual flood protection brochure in its bimonthly Tam-A-Gram magazine, mailed to approximately 37,000 homes and businesses and provides a wealth of flood information online. To learn more visit www.tamarac.org/flood.
