Tamarac, Fla. (April 23, 2025)— During the April 23, Regular Commission Meeting, in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month, the Tamarac City Commission excitedly proclaimed April 2025 as “Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month” as the City has officially earned its designation as an “Autism Inclusive City” by the Helping Adults with Autism Perform & Excel (HAAPE).

To achieve this milestone, Tamarac collaborated closely with Neuro Consulting Solutions (NCS) to train City employees, develop visual supports, and assess parks and other facilities for sensory-friendly programs and events. Additionally, Tamarac first responders received specialized training to ensure positive, supportive interactions with members of the autism community.

In recent months, the City has also launched sensory-friendly events, receiving high praise from residents for their thoughtful approach and inclusive design. One such event, the Sensory-Friendly Egg Hunt, was held ahead of the Springfest celebration and offered a welcoming environment tailored for children with sensory sensitivities.

The Autism destination aligns with the City’s mission of providing a welcoming, inclusive and sensory-friendly environment for individuals of all abilities, fostering a community where everyone feels valued and supported. Tamarac joins Cooper City, Parkland and Weston as the fourth Autism Friendly City in Broward County.

In support of the designation, Tamarac Fire Rescue vehicles have decorative Autism Awareness decals that state “Accept, Understand and Love,” and the Broward Sheriff's Office-Tamarac District will continue to bring their patrol vehicle, designed with colorful puzzle pieces, to City events throughout the year.

The City encourages residents and community members to participate in upcoming sensory-friendly events. For more information, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (954) 597-3620 or visit www.Tamarac.org/AutismFriendlyCommunity.
